Frequently Asked Questions

Is radio right for me?
Radio may not be right for everyone but, "if people who listen to radio do business with you, then radio is an option to explore... and 96% of us listen to radio every week." (Radio Advertising Bureau) Radio has the ability to expand your market reach, target your best prospects, generate sufficient message frequency, and reach mobile consumers. It is an affordable medium that when used correctly, provides a cost-effective marketing platform for nearly any type of business.

Should I advertise?
If you have competitors working to attract your customers, or if you want to consistently grow your sales and make more money, then advertising is a necessity. The key is to know who your customer is, and why they like to do business with you. Once you know the characteristics of your best customers, you simply need to target your advertising in a way that converts prospective customers with similar characteristics into loyal customers. It is important to remember that most businesses are simply unable to effectively be all things to all people. Always keep in mind that when you select a particular advertising vehicle, you are buying an audience. The goal is to buy the right audience for your business and improve your chances for success.

Does NYC radio cover all of the NY Metro?
The answer to this question is no. Long Island is simply too large for the NYC signals to reach it in its entirety. The Eastern end of Suffolk County is the single farthest point from New York City in the entire New York Metro. In fact, the Eastern tip of Suffolk is as far from New York City as Philadelphia is – That's huge! That means New York signals cannot penetrate adequately into Nassau-Suffolk, they only travel to the Suffolk County line! This fact is very important to advertisers who are looking to reach Nassau-Suffolk consumers. Nassau-Suffolk is the 18th largest market in America. It is one of the most affluent markets in America and is the #1 market in the U.S. in total consumer expenditures! The Nassau-Suffolk market has a population of over 3 million people, half of which reside in Suffolk County, outside the reach of NYC signals. Because it accounts for the largest single population and economic segment of the New York Metro, using only NYC radio will drastically under deliver this affluent marketplace.

I'm interested in an integrated marketing campaign. How can Cox Radio Long Island help?
Cox Radio Long Island can create a multi-tiered integrated marketing program consisting of on-air, online, and event marketing. By delivering your consistent message through a variety of different mediums with Cox Radio Long Island, you are sure to reach your targeted customer.

What are the most frequent mistakes advertisers make?
There are two common mistakes advertisers make. The first is not having the right level of commitment and focus. Many business owners think they need to do a little of everything instead of doing one thing well. It's been said, "I throw my advertising dollars against the wall and hope some of it sticks." Almost any business can get all the customers they need by simply attacking and dominating the right radio station. The second is throwing in the towel before the advertising can work. Advertising is like trying to get in shape. Getting started is the hardest part, and the rewards for your time and effort are not always readily apparent. However, with a healthy dose of commitment and focus to your plan, you will eventually enjoy the results. Successful advertising is no different. Basically, you need to commit to an ad campaign with enough frequency for listeners to hear your message several times.

Is it better to use a 30 second spot or a 60 second spot to convey my business's message?
At Cox Radio Long Island, we customize programs according to your needs. Typically, a 30 second commercial works well in a more visual medium such as television where the audio message is reinforced by the visual whereas a 60 second commercial on radio leaves enough time for the appropriate product information and space to make the creative memorable.

I tried radio advertising once and it didn't work. Why would it work with Cox Radio Long Island?
Experience has shown that if you consistently follow the basic rules for successful advertising, your chances for success improve greatly. If you choose not to have a good game plan for marketing your business, or if you choose to break the basic rules of advertising, than your chances for success are not good. Our job is to assist you in developing a game plan and to keep you focused on your marketing objectives. That's why we go through a regimented process that includes our marketing analysis, the assembling of an effective schedule, and development of great copy for your message. This process stacks all the odds for success in your favor. Our Account Managers are trained not to be good salespeople, but good Marketers. Suggesting a campaign that does not work is as unacceptable to us as it is to you.
