On This Date: March 24, 1984 The Breakfast Club Met For Detention

The Breakfast Club

We haven’t forgotten them. We never will. The 1985 John Hughes film, The Breakfast Club, defined a generation & became a huge part of pop culture. The theme was relatable. The soundtrack was jam- worthy, the cast was iconic & their characters were just like us in some way. On Saturday, March 24, 1984, 5 very different people reported to their high school library, caused some havoc together, & formed friendships that wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t gotten in trouble. John Hughes graduated from Glenbrook North High School, on which the film is based, and based his movies on the school and students. “The Breakfast Club” was the nickname for Saturday detentions. The bunch included rebellious bad boy John (played by Judd Nelson), the high-maintenance Claire (Molly Ringwald), star athlete Andy (Emilio Estevez), wallflower Allison (Ally Sheedy) and book smart Brian (Anthony Michael Hall). There was reportedly plans to make sequels about the beloved characters every ten years, but rumored tension between Hughes and some of the cast scuttled the potential follow-ups.
