Tokyo Olympics: MyKayla Skinner wins silver in vault as replacement for Simone Biles

TOKYO — MyKayla Skinner, whose departure from the Tokyo Olympics was pushed back after Simone Biles withdrew from the competition, will take home some hardware when she does leave Japan.

Skinner won the silver medal in vault with a score of 14.916. Rebeca Andrade, of Brazil, won the gold with a 15.083 score. Yeo Seo-jeong, of South Korea, won bronze with a 14.733 score.

“Looks like I get to put a competition Leo on just one more time,” Skinner wrote on social media before competing. “Can’t wait to compete in vault finals. Doing this for us (Simone Biles). It’s go time baby!”

Fellow American Jade Carey, who finished with the second highest score during qualifications and was considered a top contender, finished in eighth place in the finals.

On Saturday, Biles, 24, pulled out of the individual finals for vault and uneven bars at the Olympics. She previously withdrew from the team and individual all-around finals at the Games in order to focus on mental health concerns.
